Apple sees red: iPhone 7 gets colourful update to help AIDS relief

In an ongoing effort from Apple to contribute to HIV/AIDS relief, the tech giant has announced the release of the special edition PRODUCT(RED) iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, in a bright red finish, as part of its partnership with (RED) to contribute to HIV/AIDS relief funding.

(RED) does meaningful work by offering access to HIV/AIDS relief programs across Sub-Saharan Africa. Two thirds of the world’s HIV-positive population live in this region.

All money raised by (RED) goes to the Global Fund, which was created in 2002 to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The Global Fund provides a range of services with the specific goal of stopping transmission of HIV/AIDS from mothers to their newborn children.

Since it’s creation in 2006, (RED) has given more than US$465 million to the Global Fund towards HIV/AIDS funding, with more than US$130 million of that coming from Apple as part of a long-standing partnership.

“Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products, from the original iPod nano (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition all the way to today’s lineup of Beats products and accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch,” says Tim Cook, Apple CEO.

Deborah Dugan, (RED) CEO, adds, “Apple is the world’s largest corporate donor to the Global Fund, contributing more than US$130 million as part of its partnership with (RED)."

“Combining the global reach of the world’s most loved smartphone with our efforts to provide access to life-saving ARV medication in sub-Saharan Africa, customers now have a remarkable opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the Global Fund through the purchase of this new beautiful (PRODUCT)RED iPhone," she says.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are the most recent and most advanced iPhones to date, and offer the user many different features. Both models feature a 12 megapixel camera, capable of day and night photography. The phones offer higher performance, more power and better battery life than previous generations of iPhone, as well as stereo speakers. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus are both water and dust resistant.
