Ads fund free mobile videos

FYI, this story is more than a year old

3 Hong Kong has joined forces with UK-based mobile video content distributor Swanbay to offer free mobile videos to its customers who do not mind watching advertisements.

Video content on offer includes highlights of World Cup and Premier League matches, Basketball NBA, music videos and movies on Planet TV, which are exclusively available on 3 Hong Kong’s mobile platform.

John Haskins, Director of Sales for Swanbay, says there’s potential in the fact that mobile users are spending more time online. He also says they are willing to watch ads on their mobiles in return for free content.

Raymond Ho, Head of Ccontent Management of 3 Hong Kong, said the service will attract more viewers to 3’s mobile platform, which had been only offering paid video content until now.

“Some users prefer to pay for premium content, and some prefer watching an ad instead,” he said. “Now we’re serving both types and Swanbay’s Planet TV service will further encourage our customers to enjoy infotainment service anytime anywhere.”

This year alone Swanbay has launched its service in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and plans to launch “soon” across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. No plans have been announced yet for New Zealand.
