Aucklanders set for free Telecom Wi-Fi

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Aucklanders will soon benefit from free wireless internet across the city thanks to a Telecom trial run.

But plans to run a public Wi-Fi experiment, in a bid to better gauge the demand for Wi-Fi in the city, will mean the free service stops in September.

"Following the success of our summer hotspot trial we are now expanding free Wi-Fi into Auckland," the telco said.

The company says hotspots will be located around the city, as well as Ponsonby, Greenlane, Royal Oak, Sandringham, Herne Bay, Westmere, Lynfrield, Mt Eden, Onehunga, Mt Roskill and Mt Albert.

Speaking to Fairfax NZ News, Telecom's mobile product manager Ed Hyde said:

"We all know that Kiwis are better connected than ever before, and internet enabled devices are everyday items chucked in handbags, school bags and briefcases."

Believing Telecom's public wi-fi to have the potential to be a "really good way of helping customers make the most of those devices on-the-go", Hyde claimed the question was now seeing whether Kiwis agree.

"We're keen to understand if Kiwis agree, which is why for a limited time we are offering free access to all," he said.
