Central District Police launch Facebook page
In an attempt to further engage communities, the Central District Police have today launched its own Facebook page.
The Central District covers the Manawatu, Tararua, Horowhenua, Whanganui, Ruapehu, and Taranaki areas.
The Facebook page aims to help prevent crime as well as identifying and locating offenders.
"A significant number of people are on social media and it's another effective way we can connect with our communities," says Sue Schwalger, central district commander superintendent.
The New Zealand Police has its own national Facebook page, as well as numerous regional Facebook pages serving specific communities or specific initiatives.
"There are many examples where Facebook is being used successfully by police in other districts and areas to get the community more involved in helping us fight crime," Schwalger says.
The page will include a wide range of information including crime prevention advice, wanted offenders, and appeals for information about crimes.
"It's not just about identifying criminals, but also sharing the stories about the work we do with the many diverse communities we serve," Schwalger explains.
"People can stay in touch with what is happening in a police space across our District, and the page is a great platform to share a wide range of information including providing crime prevention advice and a local flavour of better work stories."
The Police insist people do not use Facebook in an emergency or to report a crime, and should continue to use the 111 emergency number to report crime, accidents, emergencies and suspicious activity.
