Developers confirm Game of Thrones MMO
Tue, 6th Mar 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

It’s the biggest thing in swords-and-sandals fantasy at the moment, so it only makes sense that Game of Thrones is about to be adapted into a MMORPG.

BigPoint has announced that the MMORPG is currently in development, in collaboration with Artplant, the company responsible for Battlestar Galactica Online.

This is just another step in the global conquest of the Game of Thrones series, based on the George R R Martin series of books called A Song of Ice and Fire.

The new game will be built with the Unity engine and will be browser based, but no other details have been released.

Several video games based on the series are already in the works, while Blood of Dragons, a text-based roleplaying game, has been online since 2007.

On top of that, development company Cyanide published a real-time strategy last year and will release another, similar game at some point this year.

But video games are just the tip of the iceberg for HBO’s new golden-child – the books have been turned into comic books, card games, board games, artworks, collectible figurines and display weaponry.

The only screenshot currently available for the new MMO can be seen here, although it’s not particularly spectacular.

Do you think the game could be a success, or is it just another attempt to cash in on the latest craze? Post your comments below.
