Driving licence email scam continues

Mon, 1st Nov 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The scam involves false emails pretending to be from the New Zealand Transport Agency that direct recipients to a website telling them they need a new driver’s licence.

“These emails are not from the NZTA. They are part of a phishing scam which leads people to counterfeit websites. If you receive one of these messages you should delete it immediately,” said NZTA Spokesperson Andy Knackstedt.

Senior investigator Toni Demetriou says at the very least, personal information will be obtained if the form is completed.

The real sting is said to come from credit card and security code details scammers obtain after asking recipients pay a small transaction charge of $2.00 for changing the details.

“In an attempt to further authenticate the phishing scam, the payment processing page also has an ASB bank CardPay logo,” Demetriou.

The NZTA have urged anyone who inadvertently provided their driver licence details on the counterfeit website to phone its contact centre: 0800 822 422 and have their licence cancelled.
