Facebook is working on laser technology that will be able to deliver high speed internet through drones or satellites.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of the social media site, made the announcement on his social media page.
He said, “Our Connectivity Lab is developing a laser communications system that can beam data from the sky into communities. This will dramatically increase the speed of sending data over long distances.
"Normally you wouldn’t be able to see the actual beams, but for this demonstration we made them visible."
The company has also reportedly approached the Indian government to carry out a pilot project in the country.
This project is just one of the connectivity projects Facebook is working on as part of the Internet.org initiative.
“As part of our Internet.org efforts, we’re working on ways to use drones and satellites to connect the billion people who don’t live in range of existing wireless networks," Zuckerberg says.
Internet.org is a partnership between Facebook and other technology leaders, nonprofits and local communities, with the aim of bringing internet access to less developed countries by increasing efficiency and facilitating the development of new business models.
