This one was an absolute landslide; you could argue it’s due to the lack of competition and truly killer titles on Nintendo’s Wii, but that’s simply doing Super Mario Galaxy 2 a gross disservice. The reality is that this game boasts enough solid gameplay to toe it with pretty much anything on offer on any other platform. Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn’t flip the coin entirely on its superb predecessor, but it added just enough innovation to serve up a fresh experience that, impressively, managed to improve on what many consider a near-perfect game. It just goes to further demonstrate that you don’t necessarily need a console with the biggest specs to deliver an outstanding game, and that Nintendo – and indeed, Mario – is still king.
NOTABLE MENTIONS: Donkey Kong Country Returns, Epic Mickey
