Game review: Fable II on Xbox 360
Role playing games on the Xbox 360 have been few and far between. But if there was one game to rule them all, it would have to be Fable. It was a phenomenal worldwide hit on the Xbox in 2004, although many fans complained that four years has been a painfully long wait for this second instalment. But now the wait is over and you won't be disappointed.
If the enchanting visual style of Fable 2 isn't enough to astound you, the gameplay will certainly impress. The character creation mode lets you choose your gender this time (as opposed to always being male), but the most compelling part of the game is the flexibility to play a good or an evil personality. Being able to share the magical experience with a friend in co-operative mode is also a welcome addition.
Fable 2's rich storyline drives the game, but it's the quests and the freedom to choose your own destiny that will drag you back to the world of Albion again and again. Various quests will help your character progress in the areas of magic (Will), weapons (Skill) and attributes (Strength). Interestingly, your character's social standing (Renown) will ultimately affect the outcome of any given situation. For example, if you choose the path of evil your appearance will change (you'll become uglier) and characters you interact with will fear you.
Fable 2 has enormous scope. When you're not doing good deeds for others or sacrificing villagers, you can buy property, find a spouse, have a family, and even move into a house. It's kind of reminiscent of The Sims, except with adventure, magic and action mixed in. However, if adventuring and fighting are all you want to do, you can focus on increasing your attributes through quests such as killing local bad guys.
Fable 2 is a game not to be missed. If you're spending time at home this Christmas, the world of Albion awaits you.
