Fellow gamers: The blood sweat and tears of gaming in the dark ages are coming to fruition. Razer is actually going to pay you to play.
Razer announced their new “Paid to Play” initiative on Friday using zVault, their virtual wallet and digital currency system. This program is the first solution of its kind for rewarding gamers, casual and hardcore alike, worldwide.
Gamers can earn ‘zSilver’, a virtual currency, simply by playing games launched through free software Razer Cortex. For those not in the know, Razer Cortex provides gamers with a variety of PC performance tools and allows them to search for the best game prices and deals all in one tidy little package.
Here’s the fun part: zSilver earned is redeemable for Razer products, discount vouchers and other exclusive items. Furthermore, Razer has plans to broaden the spectrum of zSilver rewards in the future. Gamers will be able to use zSilver on things like coffee, movie tickets and so much more.
Razer launched this initiative in an effort to make all Razer products available hardcore gamers, "For Gamers. By Gamers" is their motto, and it’s one they obviously stand by.
You can earn three zSilver per minute, with a limit of 900 per day. Currently the list of eligible games is short and only includes the world’s most popular titles, but it remains to be seen if this will change.
Playing Overwatch, DOTA 2, League of Legends, Paladins and Counter Strike: Global Offensive will earn you zSilver. These games are some of the most played amongst Razer users, with with around 138 million players globally.
"The concept of everyday gamers getting paid to play has never been done before," says Min-Liang Tan, Razer CEO.
"Gamers may reap the benefits of a rewards system simply by doing things they're already doing."
"The world of gaming is the ultimate even playing field, representing every kind of person in the world. We are excited about helping good people to get Razer products wherever they are, whatever their situations, and regardless of what game their playing, as long as they are gamers."
All you need to be eligible is a verified Razer account and Razer Cortex and you’re ready to earn that juicy zSilver. Examples of redeemable items are the Razer Mamba Chroma gaming mouse, Razer Blackwidow Chroma gaming keyboard, and discounts on various products in the Razer range.
Razer’s ridiculously popular Razer Mug Holder, will soon also be made exclusively redeemable with zSilver, and it is not available for retail sale. It will set you back 100,000 zSilver (a casual 555 total hours of gaming) and the first two weeks of the programme will reward users with double zSilver per minute for faster earning,
This exciting news for the gaming community. The thousands of hours dedicated to gaming as a hobby in the past are finally going to start paying off for gamers.
Perhaps now losing a DOTA 2 match (through no fault of your own, of course) will be slightly less bitter knowing you banked some zSilver for the trauma.
