Google jumps on the facebook bandwagon
Sun, 1st May 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Facebook has taken the online world by storm and is leaving a trail of casualties (Myspace who?) in its wake. Google is determined not to be one of them. Although Google didn’t start out as a social website, in recent times it has been heading further and further in that direction. Google’s engineering director, David Glazer, says that Google is constantly trying to incorporate more social aspects into the tools we already use, such as Gmail (which now includes chat) and Google Talk. Now, Google has taken a page out of Facebook’s book with the new +1 Button.+1 allows users to share recommendations in Google’s search results. So for example, "If you’re looking for a new pasta recipe, we’ll show you +1s from your culinary genius college roommate. And even if none of your friends are baristas or caffeine addicts, we may still show you how many people across the web have +1’d your local coffee shop,” explains Google. Sound familiar? +1 is essentially a Facebook "Like” button on a larger scale. It uses signals to identify the recommendations most useful to you by people you’re connected to through your Google account. And they’re not stopping there: "Soon we may also incorporate other signals, such as your connections on sites like Twitter, to ensure your recommendations are as relevant as possible,”added Google. Hmm, this has got us thinking – if Facebook and Google both kept expanding to the point where they were interchangeable in terms of what they had to offer, which one would you use? Better yet, if you had to choose right now between Facebook and Google, which one could you live more easily without?
