Google Reader petition hits 100,000 signatures

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Google may be ditching Google Reader, but a campaign to save the popular service is gaining momentum.

An online petition to stop the move hit 100,000 signatures over the weekend, with over 400,000 page views since its creation last week.

The "Keep Google Reader Running" petition on Change.org may appear a valiant effort to change Google's mind, but the apparent doom and gloom from the announcement has not been felt universally.

“The writing has been on the wall for RSS clients in general as Twitter and other social networks have grown better at delivering the news,” Gizmodo says.

And as mentioned last week on TechDay, sentiment can be an alien word in the tech industry, providing a bigger and better replacement comes along.

“We’re living in a new kind of computing environment,” Google says. “Everyone has a device, sometimes multiple devices."

So despite it's popularity since launching in 2005, even the search giant itself can see the need for change.

Alternatives to Google Reader have been offered in the form of The Old Reader, Feedly, Newsblur, Reeder and Digg.

So for all the disappointed fans taking to Twitter to air their frustration, is it time to remove the Google Blinkers and simply find an alternative?
