Intelligent transport technology vital in Auckland Transport’s 10-year plan

FYI, this story is more than a year old

The industry association for Intelligent Transport Systems, ITS New Zealand, has been buoyed by the significant recognition of technology as a key part of developing Auckland's transport systems, as set out in the 10-year Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) announced this week.

The RLTP agreed to by Auckland Transport on Thursday, identifies some 28 Billion dollars in spending for the next ten years. While built infrastructure still forms the vast bulk of the costs within the plan, technology is given significant recognition and dedicated budget.

ITS New Zealand chair David Vinsen says, "It's positive to see Auckland Transport recognising that Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Transport Technology as a whole will be an enabler for better transportation outcomes.

“ITS receives a significant budget allocation in the Regional Land Transport Plan and is recognised as a key component of the potential of digital solutions to address congestion."

“We're already seeing many improvements in real-time travel information which enable commuters and businesses to make informed transport choices.”

“The plan makes it clear that ITS and technology will be an important factor in improving network performance and safety of all road and rail users."

ITS New Zealand has recently published a strategy and business plan which sees the organisation set to increase activity and membership by broadening its focus to encompass emerging technologies and solutions.

Traditionally ITS focussed heavily on traffic management solutions, ITS New Zealand is targeting converging technologies of vehicle technology, communication systems, data analytics, mobility as a service, and demand management techniques.

Beyond technology infrastructure, the association is aiming to be the driver of conversations on the solutions, business models and transport and urban design trends which technology helps to create.

At the CIO Awards announced earlier this month AT won the prestigious “Business Transformation through Digital and IT” award, highlighting the organisation's focus on digital transport technology initiatives.
