FYI, this story is more than a year old

Apple has delivered a prelude to its quarterly earnings report, due out tomorrow, announcing the iPhone 4S sold 4 million units across the seven countries in which it made its debut over the weekend.

The figure tops the highest predictions made going into the weekend, and far outstrips the previous record of 1.7 million, set by the iPhone 4. Apple will debut the iPhone 4S in 22 more countries on October 28, and a further 70 by the end of the year.

In addition, Apple says more than 25 million customers have installed iOS 5 and more than 20 million have signed up for iCloud since both were released last week.

Apple shares climbed to a peak of US$426.67 before dropping to close at US$419.28.

Samsung, meanwhile, has delivered its own announcement, reporting that sales of the Galaxy S and Galaxy SII smartphones have topped 30 million around the world.

The Galaxy S has sold just under 20 million units since its launch in 2010, Samsung says, with the Galaxy SII topping 10 million, having been on the market for five months.

Samsung has also launched legal action in Australia and Japan seeking a ban on sales of the iPhone 4S due to alleged patent infringements, following similar action in France and Germany.

Despite the dispute, according to the Korean Times the two companies are expected to maintain their manufacturing relationship, with Samsung continuing to supply Apple with the A6 quad-core processors used in its mobile devices.
