A popular Kiwi blogger has been charged after publishing information about two high profile New Zealand court cases. Cameron Slater appeared today in the Auckland District Court charged with five instances of breaching name suppression orders. He faces fines of up to $1000 on each count. Slater, creator of the blog site ‘whaleoil’, told reporters outside the court that he would be fighting the charges. “I'd say about one percent of cases deserve name suppression,” he said, speaking from outside the courtroom, “and that's those involving sex crimes against minors, so that the victims are not identified”, the New Zealand Press Association reported. Slater says that the charges have generated huge traffic to his Web site.
