Kiwi solar power company Sunergise has turned to crowdfunding to help reconnect Fijian homes following Cyclone Winston last week.
The cyclone left hundreds of thousands of Fijians without water, shelter and power.
The company has launched a campaign on crowdfunding platform PledgeMe, with a target of $15,000. Currently the project has raised $8820 with eight pledgers, with eight days to go on the campaign.
Pledges will directly fund the provision of portable solar power kits to the worst-affected communities in Fiji.
Sunergise co-founder Lachlan McPherson says they were turning to their crowd to ‘help Fiji shine again'.
“We want to help the affected Fijian families rebuild in a way that helps them reduce the effects of climate change,” McPherson explains.
“These solar kits give them the power they need now, and into the future,” he says.
“Right now we are distributing the solar power kits we had in storage and we need our crowd's help to bring in more,” McPherson says.
PledgeMe team member Barry Grehan says the campaign will give many Fijians the opportunity to rebuild their lives and communities.
“The islands have been hit extremely hard over the past week but, with the collective support of Sunergise's crowd and the New Zealand public, we can help to power the recovery,” Gerhan says.
