NetherRealm 'wanted' Xbox-exclusive Mortal Kombat character

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Eurogamer reports that NetherRealm Studios "certainly wanted" to include an Xbox-360-exclusive character for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot. In an interview, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon explains that the omission was simply out of the developer's hands.

"Unfortunately, the circumstances didn't allow us to make a 360 exclusive," said Boon to Eurogamer. "I'm not allowed to talk too much about it, but I can tell you we certainly wanted to do an exclusive for 360, but that's all I can say. It was not a decision we made where we said, 'Oh, let's not do one for the 360'."

In the lead-up to the game's release, there was much speculation about the possibility of an Xbox-360-exclusive character to counter the inclusion of God of War's Kratos in the PlayStation 3 version of the game. Such characters as Halo's Master Chief and Gears of War's Marcus Fenix were commonly floated as possibilities in fan discussion on Twitter and in gaming forums.
