News: Apple's quarterly results, Lion Server for home use, Macintosh birthday, and more!
Wed, 25th Jan 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Apple's quarterly earnings call happened yesterday, and the results were pretty amazing (even for a company like Apple). Record sales of $46 billion coupled with a record profit of $13 billion alongside 37 million iPhones, 15.4 million iPads, and 5.2 million Macs. With those kinds of numbers, Apple now has almost $100 billion in cash — which begs the question: are they looking to do anything with all that money laying around? Ars Technica investigates whether Lion Server is suitable for use in a home environment. With the introduction of Lion server, many things were simplified in an attempt to make things easier for the server administrator — but that, in itself, has lead to additional complexities that even experienced server admins might not know about. At the end of the day, it's probably not as suited to home use as it could have been.

The Macintosh turned 28 earlier this week, and it was on January 24, 1984 that the very first Macintosh was announced by none other than Steve Jobs. Happy 28th birthday, Macintosh — perhaps you're not as popular as your iOS counterparts seem to be, but you'll always have a special place in my book...

...Which makes me quite hesitant to read articles like this from ZDNet, where they speculate that Apple's success could kill off the Macintosh as we know it. I doubt such an event would ever happen, but there's anecdotal evidence that it could.
