Nokia announced a switch to operator billing for all customer purchases through  its Ovi Store app marketplace.

Nokia said operator billing works by using the SIM card for identification and any purchases are charged to the monthly phone bill or subtracted from a pre-paid account. Prior to this, customers were required to use a credit card for app purchases.

According to Steve Lewis, head of Nokia New Zealand sales, two out of three people prefer to make app purchases via phone bill than over credit card.

Operator billing will be available for Vodafone and 2degrees customers with Nokia phones running Symbian.
