Octodad: Dadliest Catch is full of laughs and enjoyment

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is quite possibly one of the best and most entertaining games available on the PS4 right now.

With the video game market flooded with FPS games recently, it's a breath of fresh air when we see a game like this come out.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch may sound like a mundane game on the surface, but deep down it has a lot of heart and one of the most humorous storylines ever.

The main gameplay has you controlling Octodad doing everyday things like housework and getting the groceries. These are boring things to do as a human, but as an octopus, it becomes a real challenge.

The real challenge and fun factor about the game is trying to figure out how to effectively control Octodad effectively. Unlike most video game characters, Octodad is an octopus and they are the hardest creatures to ever control in a video game.

Octodad will flop around a lot and you will have to maneuver his arms and legs efficiently just for him to walk in a straight line.

The levels are one of the best I have seen in a video game in a while. The supermarket and aquarium that Octodad visits with his family are accurately animated and full of life.

The best thing about the game is that nearly everything in interactive, and even some of the NPC characters will react in a weird way when they see Octodad slithering around the place.

The main humor of the game lies within the tasks that Octodad needs to do in order to complete a level. The tasks are simple ones such as drinking coffee or even cooking hamburgers for your family.

Again, this is easy for humans to do, but insanely difficult for an octopus to achieve. Sometimes you will spend countless minutes trying to figure out the best way possible to complete the goals in the game.

Octodad

Octodad: Dadliest Catch has somewhat of a plot that involves him trying to run away from a Sushi Chef. The chef is the only person in this game that really knows he's an octopus and not a human being. Even Octodad's wife doesn't know he's no human.

As the game progresses, Octodad will have to run away from the chef to avoid being made into "moderately priced sushi".

Graphically, Octodad: Dadliest Catch looks bright and colourful much like a Saturday morning cartoon.

That being said, the graphics are a bit on the simplistic side and hardly pushes the boundaries of what a PS4 is capable of. I do find it weird that this game is released for the PS4 and not on the PS3 as well. As entertaining as the game is, it's a shame PS3 gamers will miss out on it.

It's also worth noting the game is very short. I managed to complete the game in just over 3 hours on my first playthrough. Having said that, there's lots of replay value because you can play levels again but from a different approach.

One example is that you can sneak past guard without using a disguise which is very challenging to accomplish.

You can also play the game with up to 3 other friends each cooperatively with each player controlling a different limb. This is hard to do as well if you're your friends cannot control Octodad very well...

Overall, Octodad: Dadliest Catch is actually one of the most entertaining games I have played on the PS4. It may be short and have simple graphics, but the humorous gameplay is what made me enjoy it most.

Verdict: 8 out of 10
