Revolut launches eSIMs for cost-effective global data use

Revolut has become the first financial institution in New Zealand to provide eSIMs and global data plans, offering customers a cost-effective solution for accessing mobile data across more than 100 countries without incurring roaming charges.

The introduction of eSIMs allows Revolut users on compatible devices to install the digital SIM card through their Revolut app, ensuring connectivity without a physical SIM. This feature facilitates the simultaneous use of eSIM and a traditional SIM card, enhancing flexibility for users travelling abroad.

Cost efficiency is a significant aspect of Revolut's offering as it promises to charge only half the amount per GB compared to regular telecommunications companies. This move addresses the growing demand for affordable mobile connectivity solutions, particularly as New Zealand residents frequently travel overseas.

In 2023, New Zealanders went on approximately 2.96 million international trips, often facing substantial costs due to high casual data rates and roaming charges, which can reach as much as NZD $11.50 for 200 MB of data in certain areas. Furthermore, telecommunications providers in the country generate an estimated NZD $114 million from roaming charges annually.

With easy access to global data plans via the Revolut app, users can continue to use the application's features without depleting their regular data allowance, even when they do not have WiFi or traditional mobile data coverage.
