Sony slashes PS Vita expectations
Fri, 2nd Nov 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

A new financial report from Sony shows they have slashed their expectations for the Playstation Vita and other handhelds.

Projected sales for the Vita this fiscal year were originally 12 million, but the number has been cut to 10 million to be sold by the end of the year, March 31, 2013.

Console sales have also fallen, with both the Playstation 3 and Playstation 2 selling almost 15 per cent less than units than last year, with almost 1.5 million less consoles sold.

Positively, software sales have picked up slightly beating last year’s number by just over one million.

This holiday season will be especially crucial to Sony, as they will be trying to sell as much software as possible with big releases like Assassin’s Creed III, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and the newest addition to the Need for Speed franchise.

The Playstation Vita will also be having its first Christmas in North America, so Sony will be hoping that plenty of people in the US will be receiving a handheld-shaped box in their stocking come December.

As it stands, the Vita still hasn’t wowed – aside from the odd gem, like LittleBigPlanet Vita, the line-up of games is yet to impress. The latest big release, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, has received a more positive reception than some other Vita titles, but sitting at a 72 on metacritic is never going to ship millions of copies.

What do you guys think? Is the Vita the type of hardware that becomes a Christmas success, or has Sony got some hard yards to put in?
