Fri, 1st Oct 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

SEPTEMBER 13TH marked 25 years since the highly influential platformer Super Mario Bros. first launched in Japan on the Famicom (the Japanese equivalent of the Nintendo Entertainment System).

Not only did the game go on to sell more than 40 million copies worldwide to date; Mario has subsequently gone on to become arguably the most iconic character in the entire industry.

He's appeared in over 200 video games since the original Super Mario Bros. popularised the side-scrolling platformer genre.

In fact, SuperMario Bros. was the best-selling game of all time until only last year, when it was finally beaten out by another Nintendo title: Wii Sports."Stimulated by advancements in technologies, we have always enjoyed developing the SuperMario Bros. series,” said Nintendo designer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

"The Super Mario Bros. series has always taken advantage of the latest technologies and is the fruit of the creativity of a number of my hard-working friends working as a team.

Nintendo has launched a 25th anniversary website in honour of the game's anniversary that features gameplay footage of 10 of Mario's major adventures from Super Mario Bros. in 1985 through to this year's Super Mario Galaxy 2!
