Telecom outage affects 5000 customers
Mon, 21st Feb 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Word is beginning to filter through that a huge outage hit Telecom in South Auckland over the weekend.

The broadband outage is said to have affected over 5000 customers that rely on Telecom’s network.

A communication from Telecom Wholesale Service Delivery, posted on the SlingShot forum, reads:

“Some Auckland residential and business customers may be unable to access the internet due to the loss of 8 STM1's (155meg bearers) between Mayoral Drive and Papatoetoe network nodes. At this stage it appears approximately 5000 customers could be affected.”

The cause of the outage was put down to 346 FRAX (Frame Relay) and IDA circuits losing service.

“5710 Broadband customers will not be able to access the internet,” read an update.

The areas of Mayoral drive to Papatoetoe are said to be caught up in the outage.

Late last night an update added, "Due to long delays in the restoration of service relating to this incident we are migrating any critical business customers temporarily to alternative nodes."

We’ve contacted Telecom for an update on the situation.

Let us know if the outage affected you in the comments below.

Update: Orcon has tweeted word that the Telecom outage is affecting its customers.

"Telecom is having network issues, and these are affecting service for many Orcon customers. Their engineers are working on it."

A second update reads: "South Auckland connections have an authentication issue (all providers). Hopefully it'll be back up soon, more updates after 1pm."

Update 2: Telecom has responded, apologising for the Auckland outage saying steady progress is being made, with the majority of customers now back online. Full story here.
