The Pope has officially tweeted for the first time, blessing his online followers as the figures passed over a million.

Delivering his message from a tablet computer in front of a Vatican audience, Pope Benedict XVI tweeted:

"Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter.

"Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."
