What are you watching? Letterboxd...

FYI, this story is more than a year old

When it comes to movies, there countless sites out there that are devoted to reviews and discussion boards, and several standouts such as Rotten Tomatoes that lead the way in user contributed content.

While that's great, there aren't many sites that allow users to write and share anything and everything about their favourite films, old or new, where you can keep track of what you've watched, what you want to watch, and write about why you think others should watch certain films.

Letterboxd is “a single place to showcase your life in film.

Letterboxd is a social network for sharing your taste in film. There are a few main features that the site promotes. Use it as a diary to record your opinion about films as you watch them, or to keep track of what you've watched or want to watch. Add reviews, ratings and tags as you go.

You can create and share lists. Create your own lists of films, such as the best Joseph Gordon Levitt films (all of them), or the worst Disney films . It's a great way to group films and share your favourites amongst your friends.

You can follow your friends on the site too. Find and follow your Twitter and Facebook friends to see what films they're watching, enjoying and discussing.

The home page features new and popular reviews of films for that week. To contribute you just have to sign up to the site. If you upgrade (as in pay) for a Pro membership, you can import data from other apps or databases, share detailed stats, directly add films to your Netflix Instant queue (US Netflix accounts only), and filter certain pages by Netflix availability.

Pretty much a Goodreads for movies, Letterboxd is actually a New Zealand company based in Auckland. With thousands of members and millions of hits from around the world, I think we can call that pretty amazing.
