A look at several Sega Games on the Nintendo Switch 2

Yesterday

FutureFive NZ was given numerous Nintendo Switch 2 game titles to review. Unfortunately, we were unable to thoroughly review all of them in a short amount of time. However, this article will tell our readers what Sega has in store for the Switch 2 at launch.

The three games that we were given were Sonic X Shadow Generations, Yakuza 0 Director's Cut, and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

Sonic Generations was first released in 2011 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and 3DS. It was a unique title because it was one of the first games to feature both classic Sonic and modern Sonic in one game. At the time, the game was received well by both critics and fans.

Fast forward to 2024, and a remaster of the game was released for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Aside from including the original game, this re-release called Sonic X Shadow Generations included new content featuring Shadow as a new playable character.

Several months later in June 2025, Sonic X Shadow Generations was released for the Nintendo Switch 2 as a great launch title. If you owned the original Nintendo Switch version, you may want to upgrade and get the game on the Switch 2 instead.

The original Switch version of Sonic X Shadow Generations only ran at 30fps, and many players noticed significant motion blurring. In the Switch 2 version, the game can now run at a smoother 60fps, and the motion blur has largely been removed.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the Switch 2 version looks closer in quality to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. I played this game for several hours, and the game looks great. Not to mention I didn't notice any lag when I was running as fast as both Sonic and Shadow.

Even if you owned the original in 2011, I feel it's worth getting this remaster for better visuals, smoother performance, and new content. The game runs well on Switch 2 both in handheld and dock modes too.

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut

Yakuza 0 originally came out in 2015 for the PS4 and PS3 consoles in Japan. Over the last decade, the game eventually became available on more platforms such as the PC, and Xbox One. The game was never released on a Nintendo platform until 2025 with Yakuza 0 Director's Cut hitting the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025.

Yakuza 0 is a prequel to the original Yakuza games featuring a younger version of Kazama Kiryu. This is years before he befriends Haruka Sawamura because she isn't born yet! My brother and I have played this game before, and it features a great story with arguably the best combat in the entire series.

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut features some new content for Switch 2 owners to enjoy. Firstly, this version of the game features newer cutscenes to give some more backstories to some of the characters in the game.

However, my favourite new addition to this Director's cut is the all-new Red Light Raid mode. It's a multiplayer mode where you can team up with friends (or the AI) to fight hordes of enemies featuring many locations from the main game.

Players will have to survive increasing waves of enemies that usually end in a boss fight. The best part is that this mode features over 60 characters for you to choose from, and you will earn money after each fight. Money helps you unlock new characters or even lets you upgrade the stats for existing characters.

Even if you have played Yakuza 0 before, I feel the Red Light Raid mode is a fine addition to the game. Not to mention, the game runs at 60fps with a 1080p resolution in handheld mode and 4K while the console is docked. It looks and runs better than the original PS4 version!

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 came out in 2020 for consoles, and for PC back in 2021. Fast forward to 2025, and a newer enhanced version is now available for the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch title. The game is fun because it features two styles of puzzle games.

I don't think I need to explain what Tetris is. Many people will know Tetris gives players different shapes, and the goal is to create lines. Once you create a perfect line, the wall breaks. The game ends when players reach the top of the screen without creating a line.

Puyo Puyo is somewhat similar, but it involves colours instead. In this game, you pretty much just have to make sure the four beads that you connect are all the same colour. You can stack them any way you want, as long as the beads and colours can touch each other.

Sega has added a new mode to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S which is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. This new feature is called Puyo Tetris Doubles Mode, and it's a 2v2 match where players have to share a single board to solve the puzzles. You can play with four human players, or have the AI as partners.

The game also has an Adventure mode with its own story where you have to battle against other opponents. The faster you solve the puzzles, the better you will be at the game. There is even a guide in the main menu to help you get better at both Tetris and Puyo Puyo.

Another new feature of this version of the game is that you can use the Switch 2 mouse controls to play as well. It takes time to get used to playing like this, but it's still a neat new feature to have.
