Australian Mortal Kombat classification appeal fails

Tue, 15th Mar 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Kotaku Australia reports that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's re-attempt to have Mortal Kombat classified in Australia has failed.

Mortal Kombat was refused a classifications rating from the Austrlian Classification Review Board late last month. The Australian classification system for games caps out at MA15+, meaning that any video game deemed to be inappropriate for those aged 15 and under is effectively barred from sale in Australia. "We're obviously extremely disappointed that the refused classification decision has been upheld by the Classification Review Board," reads a statement from Warner Bros.

"We want to thank the thousands of Mortal Kombat fans in Australia and around the world who have voiced their support during the appeal process."

The refusal of classification means that Mortal Kombat cannot legally be sold in Australia. Bizarrely, however, it's not illegal for Australians to import the game from territories where the game has received classification, like New Zealand. Or  pretty much anywhere else in the world.
