FYI, this story is more than a year old

Microsoft has taken the unusual step of asking people to drop Internet Explorer 6.The computer giant has launched a campaign urging users to get off IE 6 and upgrade to IE8 (although by the time you read this, IE9 will be available)."While we've seen record lows in Internet Explorer 6 usage, and usage continues to drop at a steady clip, there are still some users who continue to use Internet Explorer 6."Now that we're in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it's time to say goodbye," states this Microsoft website that's dedicated to counting down IE6's market share to less than 1%. "This website is dedicated to watching Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide, so more websites can choose to drop support for Internet Explorer 6, saving hours of work for web developers," said Microsoft. The firm is also asking that users spread the word and warn their friends off the browser. "Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer 6. And neither should acquaintances. Educate others about moving off of Internet Explorer 6."Microsoft says that one advantage of upgrading your browser is for a safer browsing experience."While we've seen record lows in Internet Explorer 6 usage, and usage continues to drop at a steady clip, there are still some users who continue to use Internet Explorer 6."ie6countdown.com
