FYI, this story is more than a year old

If you’re currently running low on games worth playing and own a PS3, PSP or PS Vita, it might be wise to check out a genuinely good sale coming to the Playstation Store tomorrow.

As part of Sony’s big January sale, and in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series, pretty much every Final Fantasy game from previous generations is going on sale as of tomorrow’s store update.

Although the New Zealand pricing is yet to be confirmed, NZ Gamer reports they have contacted Sony and confirmed the sale will be available in the country.

Almost all of the available games will be discounted to between $7 and $10 dollars Australian, which is somewhere between $10 and $13 NZD.

If you’ve never played any of the series, you might be at a loss as to where to begin – especially seeing as Final Fantasy I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX are available, along with the more recent additions like Dissidia and Tactics.

So, where to start? Well, as someone who grew up with far too much spare time, I would suggest beginning with VII just to get it out of the way – hardcore fans of the series will give you strange looks if you begin anywhere else.

FF VIII is also highly recommended, with perhaps the most interesting battle-system of any of the games in the series and most definitely the most addictive mini-games (aside from FFX’s Blitzball, don’t even get me started).

If you’re the romantic type, FFIX is actually a fairly classic love story and is regarded by many as the unsung pinnacle of the franchise – to my friends who believe this, I generally assume they haven’t played Blitzball. Just saying.

What do you guys think? Where is the logical place to start the Final Fantasy series, and which one takes pride of place as your favorite entry in the franchise?
