FYI, this story is more than a year old

It has been confirmed by Sony that the Playstation 3 was the best-selling console in New Zealand last year.

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand confirmed on Monday that the Playstation had lead sales last year in a clean sweep across every brand, every platform and against both hardware and software sales, taking the majority share of the $149 million games industry in New Zealand.

David Hine, sales and marketing director for Sony New Zealand told justpushstart.com the PS3 is having a strong run towards the end of its cycle.

“Playstation 3 continues to go from strength to strength in New Zealand because it remains a great value, high definition entertainment solution for the family that offers exceptional games, movies, TV and music experiences.”

The PS brand held the market with a 47 per cent value share and 44 per cent of all unit sales across all the PS platforms.

Platform performance, which combines platform hardware, software and anything else console related, was also led by the PS3 with a 31 per cent share of all units sold.

With some big releases coming up this year for the PS3, it’s possible Sony will once again have a very good year.

“This year, with anticipated AAA blockbusters on the horizon such as God of War: Ascension, The Last of US, BEYOND: Two Souls plus more for the family with new titles for Wonderbook we are planning to continue the Playstation momentum,” says Hine.

This information comes from the annual report from New Zealand’s Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (iGEA), which also shows an overall 18 per cent decline in video game spending since 2011.

Only certain franchises had increases in sales, among them Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and the FIFA franchise.
