RWC bosses criticised for internet charges
The New Zealand Herald today reported that journalists travelling to New Zealand to cover the Rugby World Cup in September may be in for a shock when they attempt to connect to official internet access options during games.
According to the story, media will be charged $362 a match for a wired connection. For wireless connections, journalists can expect to pay $250 a person, per match for the first four weeks of competition, and a $50 a person for every match in the following weeks.
RWC bosses said the prices have already been reduced and it is not unusual for internet access to come at cost to journalists at world sporting events. The Herald pointed out that internet access was free at the previous Rugby World Cup in France, as well as at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa last year.
