FYI, this story is more than a year old

Speculation and rumours aside, the next-generation of console has been announced and its name is PS4.

The highly anticipated Sony announcement is currently underway, and so far we have seen game trailers, heard about the future of PS Move, got info on the cloud, and seen the first glimpse of the new controller, the Dual Shock 4.

“Today marks a moment of truth and a bold step forward for Playstation as a company,” said Sony Computer Entertainment executive Andrew House earlier today.

Specs for the new console are as follows: an eight-core CPU that runs on the X86 architecture with a badass PC GPU using GDDR5 memory. System is backed up with 8GB of memory.

If that doesn’t mean much to you, that’s pretty damn powerful, with the PS4 apparently capable of handling more than one million movable objects at a time.

The new Dual Shock 4 controller looks good, sticking to a similar layout as the previous controllers but with the addition of a touchpad, headphone jack, a “light bar” to identify players in a more “friendly” way (no idea either).

You’ll be able to pause gaming sessions at the push of a button, navigate through the console, and resume that same session immediately whenever you feel like it.

In terms of incorporating Gaikai, the cloud gaming company Sony acquired last year, you’ll be able to stream videos, save your games and download films through the cloud system.

But the most important question is, what can we play on it? So far, announced games include Knack, a Pixar-esque game featuring spectacular looking cut-scenes and a cute robot (always a winner), Killzone: Shadow Fall, infamous Second Son and Watch Dogs. Square Enix also told the crowd to be excited for E3 this year, as a new Final Fantasy title will be coming to the PS4.

Although the hardware of the PS4 won’t be backwards compatible, by using Gaikai it was suggested it may be possible to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles on the PS4, or, for that matter, any other device.
