Until Dawn is a scary game that you must experience

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Until Dawn is a new PS4 exclusive that comes out two months before Halloween. If you are into the horror genre, there will be lots of things that are sure to scare you in this game. It's hard to explain the story of Until Dawn without spoiling everything for you. All I am going to say is that a group of friends spend a night in a log cabin. What was supposed to be a friendly get together turns out to be a horrifying night when a psycho killer is on the loose. The premise of the game sounds a bit cliché as it borrows a few elements from Hollywood movies like Scream and Saw. However, the more you play the game, the better the story gets and you become invested until you want to finish it. One thing I will say is that you might dislike some of the characters at the start of the game. Some of them are whiny or act like douches. This is not a bad thing because this game is all about making choices. It's up to you to decide how you will interact with the other characters in the game.  The best way I can describe Until Dawn is that it's a horror version of Heavy Rain. It's a game you are supposed to play multiple times to see all of the different scenarios. Each decision you make could prove to be fatal for some characters and more. It was quite funny playing the game on my first playthrough as everything was unexpected. There were times I failed to press a button on time and I paid for it big time. Even when I was curious to discover something, this ended up being a bad thing too. This is why I like the fact that Until Dawn has a high replay value. Even after I completed the game the first time around, I immediately wanted to play it again to see if this decision would lead to a different outcome and more. Again, I'm not spoiling anything here but I urge you to play the game more than once to experience everything this game has to offer. If you didn't like Heavy Rain because it was full of quick time events (QTEs), you might like Until Dawn slightly better. There are still quite a bit of QTEs in the game, but quite a lot of times you will be walking around in the dark trying to discover clues or a way to escape a certain scenario. Walking around the dark slowly in Until Dawn is similar to Silent Hill or the older Resident Evil games. Everything will be dark and silent, until something suddenly jumps at you to scare your pants. There are a lot of jump scares in this game. The only downside to the jump scares is that they are done way too often. I got scared the first few times, but after that I didn't even flinch. The jump scares started to become too predictable as they added too many of them. After a while, they start to feel stale. Presentation wise, Until Dawn creates a perfect atmosphere. Every level in this game is either in a cabin with no electricity, or outside at night in the freezing cold winter. I like the fact there's no "light" in this game as it makes the game eerie to play at night. The actors in Until Dawn all play their part great too. Even though only Sam (Hayden Panetierre) and Josh (Rami Malek) were the only actors I knew before playing this game, I began to like the other people too. Everyone played their part well and was believable in their roles. It was also refreshing to see a diverse cast too as all eight of the characters are playable at some point in the game. A weird thing I noticed about Until Dawn is that the characters can only run during cutscenes only. When you are controlling them, they can only walk. I thought this was rather strange because they will still walk even though they're still being chased. Some might feel the game is very slow-paced because of this. Overall, Until Dawn is an excellent game that has multiple outcomes to urge you to play the game more than once. It may not reach the heights of Heavy Rain, but it's very close. It's worth giving this game a go if you are looking for something unique that doesn't involve shooting things all of the time. Verdict: 9.0/10
