But perhaps a more interesting story is that of the YouTube sensations who become famous without even trying. (For example, the "Double Rainbow” guy Paul ‘Bear’ Vasquez and Antoine Dodson of "Bed Intruder” fame).
These unsuspecting celebrities’ careers took off when they showed up on YouTube and their videos began spreading like wildfire across the web. Whether their fame is deserved is hugely controversial, but like it or not, these YouTubers are now raking in the dough with expensive promotional contracts, record deals, iTunes sales, YouTube remixes and merchandise – all thanks to us for watching their videos!
Here are some of our favourite YouTubers turned pop culture memes from the last year and the videos that started it all:
Paul ‘Bear’ Vasquez
Has since been interviewed on various radio and television talk shows and has a contract with Vodafone.
BED INTRUDER SONG
Has sold thousands of copies of this song on iTunes, appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 list, has an album in the works, released a line of merchandise and performed at the BET Awards.
BACON IS GOOD FOR ME
Has received more than 3 million hits on YouTube, brought a new legion of fans to the show "Wife Swap” (where the clip originated from) and you can now buy "BACON IS GOOD FOR ME” t-shirts online.
Has garnered tens of millions of views on his videos, made appearances on Chelsea Lately as well as numerous chat and news shows, received positive feedback from multiple A-list celebrities including Katy Perry and Britney Spears and performed with rapper 50 Cent.
Dubbed "the worst song ever”, Black has received over 141 million views on her hit ‘Friday’, appeared on talk shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and plans to give all proceeds from the song to charity.
He might have been famous already, but this interview definitely took him to a whole new level...
