2degrees first in NZ telco to secure SBTi net zero target

Yesterday

2degrees has become the first telecommunications company in New Zealand to have its Net Zero by 2040 target validated by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).

The company announced this milestone, making it the second business in the country overall to achieve such validation. The SBTi is a global organisation that approves corporate climate action targets. To achieve Net Zero, companies are required to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 90% and invest in projects that offset the remaining balance. The validation process is performed in accordance with the SBTi's Corporate Net Zero Standard.

This advancement for 2degrees highlights its dedication to sustainable and transparent business practices, as it continues to focus on promoting responsible operations in New Zealand. The company has outlined a plan to reach Net Zero emissions by 2040, placing emphasis on reducing actual emissions.

The validation by SBTi consisted of rigorous audits of 2degrees' emissions, collaboration across various departments, the development of emission reduction strategies throughout the organisation, and engaging with supply chain partners.

Mark Callander, Chief Executive of 2degrees, commented, "At 2degrees, sustainability isn't just a checkbox—it's a core part of who we are. Being the first telecommunications company in New Zealand to secure SBTi validation for our Net Zero target shows that we're serious about reducing emissions at their source." He further emphasised the importance of their commitment by saying, "This is about fighting for fair for Kiwis, ensuring future generations inherit a country they can be proud of. We all must answer the call on climate change."

As part of its strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2040, 2degrees plans to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030 and intends to integrate sustainability practices throughout its operations. Key components of this plan include improving 5G network efficiency, transitioning vehicle fleets to electric vehicles, assessing supplier sustainability as part of procurement processes, and enhancing energy efficiency in its retail operations.

Mark Callander remarked, "Climate action is not just a 'nice-to-have' initiative, and it never was—it's a business imperative. As global expectations grow for companies to demonstrate real climate accountability, we're leading by example and encouraging others to join us on this journey. Sustainability is not only the right thing to do—it's smart business."

The validation also strategically positions 2degrees as a preferred partner for organisations and businesses with similar commitments, as adhering to emissions reduction strategies is increasingly becoming a business standard.

"We're proud to be paving the way for New Zealand businesses," Callander added, "This isn't about competition—it's about collaboration. We're all in this together, and we're committed to sharing what we learn to help other businesses join the fight for a sustainable future."

Rebecca Lindegger, Head of Sustainability at 2degrees, expressed satisfaction at joining the SBTi's list of global partners. She stated, "We're pleased to join SBTi's roster of global partners on a journey to do better for the planet. There is a need for science-based target setting and standards to enable corporate decarbonisation on a mass scale. We all have a role to play in the fight against climate change to meet the aims of the Paris Agreement and 2degrees is paving the way in New Zealand for other businesses to follow suit."

2degrees aims to work alongside its partners and business clients to disseminate knowledge regarding emission reduction methods as part of its extensive sustainability objectives.
