High tech solution sought for Auckland traffic

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Traffic experts from around the Asia Pacific region are meeting in Auckland today for the annual Intelligent Transport Systems Summit.

One of the main themes will be to see how technology can ease congestion on the city’s overburdened motorways and highways.

ITS New Zealand president, Deryk Whyte, said the summit will give the chance to hear how traffic and technology can work together.

Intelligent Transport Systems refers to the application of technologies from basic management systems such as car navigation, traffic signal control systems, variable message signs, automatic number plate recognition or speed cameras to monitoring applications such as security CCTV.

"Now more than ever, we need innovative solutions to help in reducing the number of accidents on our roads, reduce congestion and pollution, and meet the growing demands of our transport network more cost effectively," Whyte said.
