Apple introduces the thinnest, most advanced Apple Watch yet
Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 10, which brings several advancements in design and functionality. Notably, it is the thinnest Apple Watch to date, adding to its comfort and usability. The new model also boasts the largest, most advanced display seen in an Apple Watch.
Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, commented on the release stating, "Around the world, Apple Watch has had an immeasurable positive impact on people by helping them stay healthy, active, safe, and connected to the things that matter to them — and it's helped save countless lives along the way. Apple Watch Series 10 builds on a decade of breakthrough innovations to offer the most advanced version yet, with even more intelligence, our biggest wearable display, and a design that's slimmer and sleeker than ever."
The new watch is nearly 10 per cent thinner than previous models, such as the Series 7, 8, and 9, whilst still maintaining the all-day 18-hour battery life. The introduction of the S10 SiP technology aids in creating a thinner profile and enhancing performance and power efficiency. Additionally, aluminium cases weigh up to 10 per cent less than those of Series 9, and titanium cases are nearly 20 per cent lighter than the stainless steel variants from Series 9.
Apple Watch Series 10 features the largest and most advanced display of any Apple Watch to date. The screen is 30 per cent larger than the Series 4, 5, and 6 models, making it easier for users to read messages, emails, or workout metrics. This is the first Apple product to feature a wide-angle OLED display, which contributes to better readability and a 40 per cent increase in brightness when viewed at an angle. In addition, faster refresh rates enable new functionalities like displaying a ticking seconds hand on select watch faces even in always-on mode.
The new model also offers faster charging capabilities. The enhanced charging coil integrated into the metal back allows users to gain up to eight hours of daily use with just fifteen minutes of charging. This efficiency extends to sleep tracking, requiring only eight minutes of charging. The device can charge to 80 per cent battery within approximately 30 minutes.
Another significant feature is the sleep apnoea notifications. Apple Watch Series 10 utilises its accelerometer to detect small wrist movements associated with interrupted breathing patterns, potentially indicating sleep apnoea. This data is analysed over multiple nights, and users are notified if consistent signs of sleep apnoea are detected. The information can be reviewed in the Health app, and a comprehensive report can be generated for discussion with healthcare providers.
For water activities, the watch includes a new depth gauge that can measure up to 6 metres underwater and a temperature sensor. These features, along with new metrics for pool and open water swims, make it a versatile device for aquatic environments. The Tides app provides tidal information for various locations globally, aiding in planning water activities.
Audio playback from the built-in speaker is now possible, and a new voice isolation technology ensures clearer calls even in noisy environments. The watch is available in new finishes, including a polished jet black aluminium and various titanium options. Notably, Apple has continued its push towards sustainability with the Series 10 being made from recycled materials, contributing to its carbon-neutral status.
Apple Watch Series 10 starts at RRP NZD $749, while the Apple Watch SE is priced from RRP NZD $469. New bands and watchOS 11 will also be available, with features extending to older models like Apple Watch Series 6 or later.
