Apple unveils iPadOS 18 with new Apple Intelligence system

Apple has unveiled iPadOS 18, a substantial upgrade poised to enhance the iPad experience. The update brings a suite of new features, including an Apple Intelligence system, a comprehensive Calculator app with Math Notes, and several tools tailored for the Apple Pencil. This significant overhaul is geared towards making the iPad more versatile and user-friendly.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, remarked, “Our most versatile device is becoming even more powerful and intelligent than ever with iPadOS 18.” Federighi highlighted the variety of updates designed to leverage the unique capabilities of the iPad, underscoring improvements such as personalisation options for the Home Screen, a redesigned Photos app, and the addition of Calculator with Math Notes.

One of the central features of iPadOS 18 is the introduction of Apple Intelligence, a powerful personal intelligence system that integrates deeply with iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. Combining generative models with personal context, Apple Intelligence is designed to assist users with language and image comprehension, prompt actions across apps, and accelerate routine tasks. Supported on iPad models equipped with M-series chips, this feature prioritises user privacy by ensuring data is not stored or accessible to Apple.

The all-new Calculator app introduces Math Notes, enabling users to solve mathematical expressions in handwritten form using the Apple Pencil. The app boasts a graphing feature that allows users to write or type equations and insert graphs with a single tap. These notes are automatically stored in a dedicated folder within the Notes app, providing easy access and organisation.

Handwritten notes receive an upgrade with Smart Script, which enhances legibility by smoothing and straightening text in real-time. Users can easily edit handwritten text, insert additional notes, or scratch out sentences while maintaining the appearance of their personal handwriting. The Notes app also introduces new text highlighting colours and the ability to collapse content under headings for a more organised display.

Home Screen customisation is expanded, allowing users to freely position app icons and widgets. Customisation extends to Control Centre as well, which has been redesigned for easier access to frequently used controls. Developers can now leverage the Controls API to integrate third-party app controls directly into Control Centre.

Other notable features include a redesigned tab bar for easier navigation, a revamped Photos app for better photo organisation and display, and enhancements to the Messages app that bring new text formatting and scheduling capabilities. Safari, too, has been updated with machine learning-powered Highlights and an improved Reader experience for streamlined article presentation.

Privacy remains a key focus in iPadOS 18. Users can lock and hide apps to prevent unauthorised access to notifications and content. Moreover, users now have finer control over app permissions and contact sharing, ensuring information security.

Apple Intelligence introduces new writing tools, enhanced image capabilities, and improved functionality for Siri. The system supports tasks such as rewriting, proofreading, and summarising text across multiple apps and third-party platforms. Its privacy-centric design ensures data security during on-device and server-based processing.

Additional updates include the Passwords app for secure credential management, enhanced SharePlay for improved screen sharing and remote control, and advanced gaming features such as Game Mode and Personalised Spatial Audio. Calendar integration with Reminders, improved mapping tools, and new accessibility features like Eye Tracking and Vocal Shortcuts further bolster the iPad experience.

Developers can access the beta version of iPadOS 18 ahead of its public release. The update will be available as a free software upgrade for various iPad models, including iPad Pro and iPad mini. Apple Intelligence will also be available in beta on select iPhone and Mac models. Some features may have limited regional availability.
