Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 Remix

The Tony Hawk series of action-sports games is the most dominant line in the genre and year after year Neversoft has delivered a best-selling skateboarding game. So it’s no surprise to see Tony Hawk’s Underground 2: Remix on the new PSP handheld. Developed by Shaba, the game is mostly a port of the console version, but with a modicum of enhancements.

For those not familiar with the Tony Hawk Underground series, the game is a globetrotting, whirlwind tour where two teams of skaters - headed up by Tony Hawk and madman Bam Margera - travel around the world for a raucous competition of pride and money. Using a custom-made character, you have to help your team reach a certain number of goals to hit the next level. The game is a lovely exercise in hand-eye coordination and creativity - even if the physics are a bit imaginative.

The game fits perfectly onto the PSP console with controls being similar to the PS2 version - giving you complete control over camera angles and which tricks to pull at different times with ease. The multiplayer feature will appeal to many as well and allows for up to 4 separate PSPs to be wirelessly networked. Game modes range from Classic + Story modes for single player, but then hit the roof with mutliplayer games including Trick Attack, Score Challenge, Combo Mambo, Slap!, King of the Hill, Firefight, Graffiti, Elimiskate, Scavenger Hunt, Goal Attack, Capture the Flag, H.O.R.S.E., and Free Skate! It’s a really diverse set of games that add a ton of fun. Not all the games are entertaining for two players, but all of them are great for four.

Smooth, crisp graphics and a soundtrack that includes Faith No More, Jimmy Eat World, Johnny Cash, Joy Division, Less Than Jake, Metallica, The Doors, Violent Femmes and more - Underground 2 Remix is a great sports/action title for any PSP owner.
