AirPods update to bring new Siri interactions & gaming features
This month, users of AirPods can expect significant software updates that will enhance their interaction with Siri, improve call quality, and elevate their gaming experience. The updates are set to provide a hands-free, seamless experience for users, including private responses to Siri, clearer call quality in challenging environments, and reduced audio latency for gaming.
One of the standout features in the update is Siri Interactions for AirPods Pro users. This feature allows users to respond to Siri by simply nodding their head to indicate "yes" or shaking it to signify "no". This functionality is particularly useful in noisy or quiet places where speaking aloud may not be ideal. Leveraging machine learning capabilities on the H2 chip, these interactions enable users to handle calls, interact with messages, and manage notifications without uttering a word.
AirPods Pro are also set to receive an upgrade with the introduction of Voice Isolation. This feature utilises machine learning to enhance voice quality on calls, filtering out significant background noise, such as wind, to ensure that the caller's voice is heard clearly. This technology operates through the combination of the H2 chip in the AirPods Pro and the connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac device.
In addition to improved communication features, the updates will also benefit gamers using AirPods. The inclusion of Personalised Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking aims to provide a more immersive audio experience. This feature will be available across AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Particularly for mobile gamers using AirPods Pro, the update promises the lowest wireless audio latency Apple has delivered to date. Gamers will also experience improved voice quality during gameplay, with support for 16-bit, 48kHz audio, ensuring clearer communication with teammates and other players.
To further support immersive gaming experiences, Apple has introduced a developer API, enabling game developers to integrate advanced sound design more easily into their titles. This is expected to provide a richer auditory experience for users engaged in gaming on Apple devices.
The AirPods developer beta is currently available to members of the Apple Developer Program, offering a preview of these exciting new features. The comprehensive update will be rolled out as a free firmware update this spring, with Siri Interactions, Voice Isolation, and improved voice quality specifically available for AirPods Pro (2nd generation).
