Windows Phone 7 launches in New Zealand

Wed, 20th Oct 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

As we predicted last week, Microsoft has launched its new Windows 7 Phone into New Zealand before anywhere else in the world (thanks to the time line more than anything else).

To mark the occasion “32 tonnes of technology will rumble into Auckland’s Aotea Square at 7am on Thursday morning, as Vodafone and Microsoft give Kiwis a chance to be the first in the world to get their hands on the new Windows Phone 7”.

According to Microsoft, Jourdan Templeton from Waikato was the first person in the world to purchase the first Windows Phone 7.

Apps available from launch include:

  • Red Bull Racing
  • Newsroom
  • BBC News
  • ESPN
  • Weather Channel
  • Seesmic
  • Sportsmanager
  • Archtype Guitar Tuner
  • Photobucket
  • Flixster
  • Where is My Car?
  • Tripmate247
  • Shazam
  • Bejeweled LIVE
  • Foursquare
  • Frogger
There are around 50 Xbox Live games up there and 30 local apps will be added by the end of the year including TradeMe, Air New Zealand mPass, Open Home Finder, Yellow and Flybuys.

The HTC 7 is available in selected Vodafone stores around the country.

As also reported last week, Vodafone is Microsoft’s exclusive launch partner with the HTC 7 Trophy. Telecom and Gen-i will release the LG Optimus 7Q sometime in November.
